Coarsegold Ca Information & History

Coarsegold is an unincorporated town in Eastern Madera County at approximately 2,000 feet elevation with a small population of around 15,000.

As you can guess, Coarsegold is named for the gold that was discovered in Coarsegold Creek during the Gold Rush era. Obviously the creek was named for the coarse gold nuggets discovered, and then the town’s name followed. Coarsegold is considered to be part of the mother lode of the gold rush era and had many gold mines in operation during the gold rush.

Coarsegold Ca is located directly on California Highway 41 about 20 miles south of the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park and is about 30 miles North of Fresno California. Oakhurst is about 8 miles North of Coarsegold.

Coarsegold is well known for the Tarantula festival held here every year since 1997. Tarantulas are out and about in the mountain area during the fall mating season, evidently more active when the humidity rises. This unique Coarsegold tradition was allegedly started by a one time newcomer who inadvertently backed over a Tarantula much to her neighbor’s chagrin.

Coarsegold California is part of the historical lands of the Chukchansi American Indians who have built and operate the Chukchansi Gold Casino and Resort located South of town.

Coarsegold is also the site of the Coarsegold Rodeo held annually at the Coarsegold Community Center that brings in thousands every year.
